Objective: To determine the prevalence of ankyloglossia in diamniotic monochorionic and diamniotic dichorionic twins, as well as to verify the relationship between gender and type of pregnancy. Study Design: A cross-sectional observational study, carried out with 52 pairs of dichorionic/diamniotic twins and 49 monochorionic/diamniotic pairs. The data collection was carried out through the analysis of medical records and the results of the Neonatal Screening of the Tongue Frenulum Assessment Protocol in Babies, and corresponded to the period of 2 years (2020-2022). Statistical analysis of data was performed, considering the significance value of 5%. The study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the institution. Results: The statistical analysis of multiple logistic regression between the two groups of twins (Mono/Di and Di/Di) according to the socioeconomic, demographic, and clinical-epidemiological profile was statistically significant for some variables. The prevalence of ankyloglossia, according to the type of twin pregnancy, showed a statistically significant difference. There was no statistical difference in relation to sex and ankyloglossia, or between couples diagnosed with ankyloglossia according to the type of pregnancy. Conclusion: Monochorionic/diamniotic twins had a higher prevalence of ankyloglossia, regardless of gender.

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is an uncommon disease involving progressive facial asymmetry. The aim of this research was to perform an analysis of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with UCH in a clinical series. An observational retrospective study was performed on subjects with progressive facial asymmetry in the lower third of the face; all the subjects were under treatment with condylectomy and orthodontics to improve occlusion and face balance. Variables such as age, sex, clinical type, SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) intensity and a requirement for secondary surgery were included; the Shapiro Wilk test was performed to analyze the normality of the data and nonparametric analysis and the Kruskal-Wallis or Mann-Whitney tests were used to assess the association between the SPECT difference and the variables, where 2-tailed p values < 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant. Forty-nine patients between 10 and 45 y.o. (average age: 19.1 ± 7.4 y.o.) were included in the study. There were 41 female (83.6%) and 8 male (16.4%) subjects. The SPECT analysis comparing the right and left condyles with more than 10% in caption of the isotope was present in 46 subjects; the results obtained using SPECT were not statistically related to the age or sex of the sample (p = 0.277). The patients were classified into clinical types I, II and III, and no correlations could be confirmed between the clinical type and other variables. High condylectomy was conducted on all patients, among which 14 patients underwent a secondary surgery for orthognathic or cosmetic treatment, and was not related to the initial variables used in diagnosis (p = 0.98); interestingly, the second surgical treatment was more present in the clinical type I and in subjects under 16 years old with no statistical differences. Clinical analysis, medical records, 3D imaging and SPECT should be used as a complementary analysis in assessing the diagnosis of UCH and progressive facial asymmetry.

The aim of this investigation was to define the volume and area of the airway in subjects with Class II and Class III skeletal deformity. A cross-sectional study was designed including subjects with facial deformity defined by Steiner's analysis in subjects with indication of orthognathic surgery who presented diagnosis by cone beam computerised tomography. We determined the measurements of maximum area, minimum area and volume of the airway. The data were compared using Spearman's test, with statistical significance defined as p<0.05. 115 subjects were included: 61.7 % Class II and 38.3 % Class III, mean age 27.8 years (± 11.6). A significant difference was observed in the area and volume measurements in the groups studied, with significantly smaller measurements found in Class II (p=0.034). The minimum area was 10.4 mm2 smaller in Class II patients than in Class III, while the general volume of the airway was 4.1 mm3 smaller in Class II than in Class III. We may conclude that Class II subjects present a smaller airway volume than Class III subjects.


El objetivo de esta investigación de definir el volumen y área de vía aérea en sujetos con deformidad esqueletal clase II y III. Se diseñó un estudio de corte transversal incluyendo sujetos con deformidad facial definida según análisis de Stainer en sujetos con indicación de cirugía ortognática que presentaran una tomografía computadorizada de haz cónico como elemento diagnóstico; en este examen se determinaron medidas de área mayor, menor de vía aérea y volumen presente; los datos fueron comparados utilizando pruebas estadísticas con el test de spearman considerando el valor de p<0,05 para definir significancia estadística. 115 sujetos fueron incluidos, siendo 61,7 % de tipo clase II y 38,3 % de sujetos clase III, con una edad promedio de 27,8 años (± 11,6). Se observó una diferencia significativa en mediciones de area y volumen en los grupos estudiados, siendo el grupo de clase II significativamente menor (p=0,034). El área de menor tamaño fue 10,4 mm2 en pacientes clase II que en pacientes clase III, mientras que el volumen general de la vía área fue 4,1 menor en los clase II que en los clase III. Es posible concluir que los sujetos de clase II presentan menor volumen de vía área que los sujetos clase III.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to perform a systematic review to identify the most frequent uses of PLA/ PGA in alveolar bone regeneration and their results. A study was designed to answer the question: What are the most frequent uses of PLA/PLGA and their copolymers in alveolar bone regeneration?. A systematic search was done on MEDLINE, EMBASE and LILACS from April 1993 to December 2017. The search string used on MEDLINE was: (((polylactic acid) OR PLA) OR PLA-based copolymers) OR PLA blends) OR PLA scaffolds)) AND ((("Bone Regeneration"[Mesh]) OR bone regeneration) OR guided bone regeneration). The search was complemented by a manual review of the references from the articles included. Most of the studies selected were weak and, regarding the most frequent uses of PLA/PGA, 13 studies used it as a resorbable membrane, two as an absorbable mesh, one as an absorbable screw and three as filling material. Based on our results, the authors consider that PLA/PGA requires a delicate relation between the mechanical resistance and the degradation process. PLA/PGA does not interrupt bone regeneration; however, the influence in cellular events related to bone regeneration and later osseointegration have not been identified.


RESUMEN: El objetivo de esta revisión fue realizar una revisión sistemática de la literatura para identificar los usos más frecuentes de PLA/PGA en regeneración ósea en área maxilofacial y sus resultados. Se diseñó un estudio para responder a la pregunta: ¿Cuáles son los usos más frecuentes de PLA/PLGA y sus copolímeros en regeneración ósea en el sector maxilofacial?. Los estudios seleccionados fueron en su mayoría débiles y sobre los usos más frecuentes de PLA/PGA, 13 estudios lo utilizaron como membrana reabsorbible, 2 estudios como malla absorbible, un estudio como tornillo absorbible y 3 estudios como material de relleno. En base a nuestros resultados, los autores estiman que PLA/PGA requiere una delicada relación entre la resistencia mecánica que ofrece y la degradación que se produce; PLA/ PGA no interrumpe la regeneración ósea, sin embargo, no se ha identificado la potencialidad o influencia que presenta en los eventos celulares de la regeneración y posterior oseointegración.

A medida que envejecemos, en la cavidad oral se producen cambios estructurales, por lo que adultos y adultos mayores requieren del uso de prótesis dental. Sin embargo, la implementación de la prótesis dental puede generar insatisfacción en relación a las diferentes funciones orofaciales. Se realizó una revisión de literatura con el propósito de determinar cómo el uso de prótesis dental afecta la función masticatoria en adultos mayores. La búsqueda consistió en artículos científicos originales en idioma español, inglés y portugués, sin límites temporales, en la base de datos PubMed y de forma manual. Se seleccionaron 45 artículos científicos tras la aplicación de filtros. El uso de prótesis dental afecta la función masticatoria en adultos y adultos mayores, siendo un factor crítico en términos de su nivel de satisfacción y calidad de vida, así como de la velocidad masticatoria, formación del bolo y preferencia de alimentos.


As we grow old, structural changes occur in the oral cavity, so elderly people require the use of dental prostheses. However, the implementation of the dental prosthesis can generate dissatisfaction in relation to the different orofacial functions. A literature review was conducted to determine how the use of dental prosthesis affects masticatory function in elderly people. The review consisted of original scientific articles in Spanish, English and Portuguese, without time limits, in the PubMed database and manually. Forty-five scientific articles were selected after the application of filters. The use of dental prosthesis affects chewing function in adults and older adults, being a critical factor in terms of their level of satisfaction and quality of life, as well as masticatory speed, bolus formation and food preference.

RESUMEN: La masticación es una función orofacial aprendida y de relevancia para el desarrollo armónico del sistema estomatognático y craneofacial. Métodos no instrumentales para la evaluación de la masticación y antecedentes de caracterización de la función masticatoria en Chile son escasos. El objetivo de este estudio es caracterizar la función masticatoria en adultos jóvenes, específicamente el patrón masticatorio más prevalente, número promedio de ciclos masticatorios, así como el tiempo masticatorio promedio, empleando un alimento sólido. Fueron evaluados 92 sujetos, estudiantes universitarios, con edades de entre 18 y 26 años, sin distinción de sexo, con dentición permanente completa o solo ausencia del tercer molar. Los sujetos evaluados presentan mayor prevalencia de patrón masticatorio alternado (62 %), 15,1 ciclos masticatorios en promedio y un tiempo masticatorio promedio de 11,9 s. Nuestros resultados podrían ser considerados valores de referencia para la evaluación clínica de la masticación en Chile.


ABSTRACT: Chewing is an orofacial function learned and relevant to the harmonic development of the stomatognathic system and craniofacial. Non-instrumental methods for the evaluation of chewing and registers of characterization of masticatory function in Chile are limited. The aim of this study is to characterize the masticatory function in young adults, specifically the most prevalent masticatory pattern, the mean masticatory cycles, as well as the mean masticatory time, using a solid food. Ninety-two subjects were evaluated, university students, with ages between 18 and 26 years, without distinction of sex, with complete permanent dentition or only absence of the third molar. The subjects evaluated showed a higher prevalence of alternate masticatory pattern (62%), 15.1 masticatory cycles and masticatory time of 11.9 s on mean. Our results can be considered as reference values for the clinical evaluation of mastication in Chile.

Múltiples palabras habituales utilizan raíces grecolatinas, como el caso de las estructuras mencionadas en Terminologia Anatomica. Un grupo de términos anatómicos originados en la Antigua Grecia emplean el lexema griego phy-sis o su homólogo ­fisis en español, es por ello que este trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar su significado y etimología en el diccionario de la Universidad de Salamanca, Diccionario de Términos Médicos de la Real Academia Nacional de Medicina y en el Diccionario Etimológico griego-latín del español, para contribuir a la comprensión y aprendizaje de Terminologia Anatomica en el estudio de la Anatomía Humana. Se propone que los estudiantes que cursan la asignatura de Anatomía Humana posean conocimientos básicos de latín y griego, para facilitar su aprendizaje y correcta aplicación de los términos.


Multiple common words use Greek and Latin roots, as is the case of structures mentioned in Terminologia Anatomica. For instance, a number of anatomical terms originating in ancient Greece, use the Greek lexeme ph-sis or its homologue -fisis in Spanish. Therefore, this work aims to analyze meaning and etymology of this term in the Universidad de Salamanca dictionary, the Royal National Academy of Medicine Dictionary of Medical Terms, and in the Spanish etymological Greek-Latin dictionary, to contribute to the understanding and learning of Terminologia Anatomica in the study of Human Anatomy. To facilitate learning and the correct use of Terminologia Anatomica, we propose that students in Human Anatomy course assignments acquire a basic knowledge of Latin and Greek.
